SURGICAL STEEL
SURGICAL STEEL
What is Surgical Steel?
100% medically biocompatible, implant grade steel that has zero risk of sensitisation.
Why Surgical Steel?
Many are familiar with the hypoallergenic surgical steel studs used during our ear/body piercing. The reason why these are used is because the exposure to nickel in normal steel or brass jewelry tends to cause allergic skin, a condition known as allergic contact dermatitis, as a reaction to Nickel. Surgical steel is suitable for sensitive skin individuals, as well as those with nickel allergy.
- It is dermatologist approved for pierced ears and other pierced parts of the human body.
- Surgical steel is 100% medically biocompatible, implant grade steel that has zero risk of sensitisation.
- Effortless care. Advanced corrosion resistant coating and technology with no tarnishing.
- Unique Jewellery Designs. Traditional surgical steel jewellery comes in stud designs. We are one of the few worldwide that specialise in the manufacturing of surgical steel earrings in costume jewellery designs.
- Stringent Laboratory Testing Standards. Our surgical steel jewellery undergoes independent laboratory testing in Germany to ensure there is no environmental contamination of Nickel, which exceeds current
industry standards for manufacturing of surgical steel.

About Dr.TWL Biomaterials Surgical Steel Series
Dr. TWL Biomaterials uses only certified 316L surgical steel, which is implant grade steel that is 100% medically biocompatible. It has also undergone the passivation process to enhance corrosion resistance.
Long-term exposure to nickel is gives rise to potential complications of skin sensitisation, resulting in nickel allergic contact dermatitis, a form of eczema of the skin. Common areas affected would be the ear lobe, sites of body piercings, belt buckle area, due to the inherent content of nickel in costume jewellery worn.
Dr.TWL Biomaterials’ Promise
We work with material scientists who ensure stringent quality testing and oversee production of 316L surgical steel, that is produced to ASTM F138 / F139 industry standards. 316L surgical stainless steel is the choice for biomedical implants, body piercings and body modification implants. The reason is almost all other metals contain Nickel, and even trace amounts due to environmental contamination is problematic as it triggers off the sensitisation processes in the body, whereby the body’s immune system starts to mount a response attacking its own cells over weeks, months and years, leading to a condition known as allergic contact dermatitis, a persistent form of eczema which is completely preventable.

Dermatologist-Approved
“From the time a child’s ears are pierced, we recommend usage of surgical steel rather than conventional metals for earrings or costume jewellery, even in someone without previous skin sensitivity. This is because the very exposure to nickel in one’s lifetime is the sole risk factor for developing nickel sensitisation, and rigorous testing processes have to be in place to ensure there is no environmental contamination leading to trace amounts of nickel being present in many so-called ‘hypoallergenic jewellry’,” says accredited dermatologist Dr. Teo Wan Lin.
